What yoga is best for beginners?
If you're new to yoga, the sheer variety of styles and classes available can feel completely overwhelming especially if you’re not quite looking to fold yourself into a pretzel or chant ancient mantras while balancing on one leg.
In this article we’ll explore what you should be looking for when signing up to a new class:
1. No Pretzel-Creation Required
If you’ve ever looked at a yoga pose and thought, “That’s not a stretch, that’s a contortionist audition,” then perhaps don’t sign up for a class that has an image of someone who looks like they’re interviewing for circus school on the cover.
2. You Can Wear Your “I Woke Up Like This” Face
You shouldn’t need a zen-like expression that suggests you’ve been meditating on a mountain top for a week or a completely made up face to go to yoga. You should feel free to come as you are. Here, the only thing that matters is that you show up, even if your hair is doing its best impression of a bird’s nest.
3. No Judgment, Only Encouragement
Yoga should be about embracing all of you and giving yourself a break. If you stumble while trying to master the art of “standing on one leg without falling over,” don’t worry. The guides might even cheer you on like you’re the next yoga superstar - that’s where you want to be.
4. It’s All About the Flow – Not the Formalities
Forget memorising complex sequences or mastering Sanskrit terms that sound like spells from Harry Potter. Focus on how your body naturally moves and flows. The flow is about feeling good, not perfect.
5. You Can Actually Breathe
Remember when you thought yoga was all about holding your breath while twisting into human origami? Instead find a practice where they invite you to soften and breathe instead… allowing the natural relaxation response to be activated.
6. You feel better.
Many yoga styles are focused on the poses and what you look like. If you are new to yoga, this can be a bit intimidating. Instead find a yoga that focuses on how you feel while you’re doing it, taking away the need to be anyone other than you… which is the point of coming to yoga anyway.
Basically we think that yoga should be there to help you to feel more like you.
Our classes and workshops are all design to align with these principles so if you’re looking for somewhere to start your yoga journey, we’d love to have you, just exactly as you are.
